Disaster Survival Solutions, LLC was founded on the premise that
people can be empowered to protect themselves and their families at
times when emergency help is hard to find. The next big earthquake will have devastating consequences for families throughout the Bay Area, and the company founders, Bay Area residents themselves, reflected upon ways to improve their own household preparedness in case of disaster. They reviewed timely data regarding the damage that will be done to Bay Area Housing stock and the large amount of infrastructure damage and road closures in the event of an earthquake. They discussed what the real situation would look like: The Problem with Today’s Standard Kits The 2 a.m. Scenario: A major earthquake occurs in the middle of the night, there is no power, no light, no running water, the house is shaken and thoroughly littered with broken window glass and debris, you quickly gather your frightened family and grab a disaster kit (if you have one and can find it) and head outside. The house that gave you so much protection is now a dangerous and possibly unsafe place to remain, especially during the aftershocks that will soon start to strike. Once outdoors, you will open the small earthquake kit, possibly set up a tube tent—a vinyl tent open on both ends and hung from a rope—and crawl inside. As the outside world gauges the magnitude of the disaster and mounts a relief effort, your family will live in these tight, uncomfortable, exposed quarters with less than one gallon of water, a handful of food rations, and a couple of lightweight thermal blankets to share until resources from outside and can reach your family, realizing from past large scale efforts like Hurricane Katrina relief, it could be many days before that will happen. As the company founders concluded, the earthquake kits available today don’t come close to meeting American Red Cross and FEMA emergency guidelines regarding a week’s supply of food, water, shelter, sanitation, communication, and first aid. In fact, even “deluxe” kits aren’t adequate for protecting and caring for two people, let alone an entire family. The founders then asked themselves this: Even if our family could survive using these kits, would we want to have to live this way for even one day? Their answer was a resounding “no.” Their subsequent development of the QR Center has enabled them to make real household disaster relief resources available to Bay Area residents and others under earthquake threat.
